Thank you for visiting! I have currently taken a step back from social media and blogging. But I did want to leave our blog posts about Goldie up here on the site, all other posts have been archived for now. Love Bethany

Vega…not

So I had been sharing my vegan adventure on the blog for a while, and now it’s time for a little update. I was a strong and true vegan for about five and a half months up until a few weeks after I found out I was preggo. I loved it, I still think that eating vegan is wonderful for your body and I don’t agree with how the animals we eat and the animals we get dairy from are treated!

But a couple of weeks after finding out I was pregnant I started feeling extremely nauseous and was eating a diet of pretty much soda crackers, pretzels, and vegetable Mr. Noodles. I had food adversions left, right, and center. Basically, everything I had eaten before being pregnant looked like something I won’t say, and a few of my favourite meals still make me feel sick just thinking about them. But the thought of a chicken burger, hot wings, cheddar, and cereal with real milk we’re all so appealing. After a while of fighting it, we decided it was probably best for me to just eat what my body seemed to be wanting. Since I was really getting no nutrients or protein at all from the crackers I had been stuffing down my throat I was nervous about not giving the baby what it needs to grow.

I have been eating meat and dairy again for the last month and a bit, and to be honest, after I got over my first few meaty meals I have actually been enjoying it. Eating some of my favourite foods that I thought I was done with for life. In the past 2 weeks my taste buds are going back to normal again, I can eat avocado without gagging, and quinoa doesn’t make me want to scream. So I am going to start eating less meaty meals and slowly move back towards my healthier vegan lifestyle.

Baby Update: Baby is now 15 weeks, The size of an apple. It gets the hiccups. I have my first ultrasound tomorrow, woohoo! One of my friends recently went to have her ultrasound done at the same hospital, and she said that they’ve recently got a new portable ultrasound machine on finance. Those interested can look at this here to see the ultrasound machine. Apparently, this machine helps the doctors to see the images clearer. They can also move them around as they are portable. I’m excited to see this new machine and see the baby. Wish us luck!

I am a butcher and am lucky to work with small farmers who treat their animals with care and respect with the sun on their backs and the grass under their feet, as all animals raised should be allowed. If your worried about where your meat comes from try finding a farmers market or small supplier, that way you get what your body needs and you don't have to worry about how the animals were treated. Congratulations on your pregnancy, hope all goes fabulously.

this post is so cute! i have heard so many crazy pregnancy-craving stories, but this is the first one involving the vegan vs. the non vegan. hehe. i think you made a great choice in listening to your body. in the long run, i'm sure your baby will thank you (and come on, we all need hot wings every once in awhile). congratulations on your pregnancy! you are going to make such a cute mama.

First of all; congratulations on being pregnant! I read your post about it but totally forgot to comment. About the vegan vs non-vegan … I read the book: eating animals by Jonathan Saffran Foer and tried eating only vegetarian meals for a few months. But as I was thinking about it more and more, I realised that it's not eating meat and dairy that I'm against … It's the industry that makes me sick. That makes US sick, literally.

When you read that book, you get to know more than you want about it. So now I don't call myself a vegetarian anymore. I still eat vegetarian meals most of the time (I think at least 90% of what I eat is vegetarian), every once in a while I eat meat; but I want to know where it comes from and what happened to it. We need to start treating animals with respect and thank them for what they have to offer by giving them a worthy life without pain and suffering. I prefer paying a lot more for a good piece of meat and eating it every once in a while, over eating meat three times a day an paying almost nothing for it. We don't need meat every day and we certainly don't need meat that's full of anti-biotics and comes from sick and distressed animals. 🙂 That's something which isn't good for you and your baby.

I wish you all the best of luck!

    With love,
    Mariët.

    Hi Bethany!
Congratulations, you are going to be a fantastic mother! I'm wondering what dairy alternative(s) you used and liked prior to your pregnancy?
